Hello, Jenn here!!! One of the goals I've set for myself this year is to embrace simplicity. I love embellishing and sometimes I can't help but want to put all the things on every layout, but often, my favourite layouts are the ones with a little less. Not every layout needs all the things. This is especially true when you have a meaningful, and/or really gorgeous photo, and a great scrapbooking collection.
While looking through some old pictures I came across the pictures I took way back in 2009 when my daughter and I flew back home for the first time after moving out West, for Easter. It was my daughter's first time flying and she was so excited. I knew that the gorgeous black and white airplane paper from the Where to Next? collection would be perfect to document this story. It also was the perfect background for doing a little watercolour smooshing. I mixed up some green and some turquoise to match the colours from the collection, and used a stamp block to smoosh the colour onto the paper where I wanted to put the picture and an embellishment cluster. While that was drying I used more paper from the collection to matte my photo. I also pulled out some quotes, and pieces of luggage from the ephemera pack.
I decided to keep the manufacturer's strip on the background paper, which says "Say Yes to Adventure" because I thought it fit perfectly with the photo. I cut a quarter inch from the top of the paper to make up the difference. I decided to turn the paper on it's side so that the planes are going right to left instead of up. I used the reverse side of the strip I cut from the top of the paper, along with a strip from another paper to layer beside the original strip. I also added a strip of the black paper horizontally, to create a shelf for the photo to sit on. I adhered the photo layers with some fun foam to give it some dimension, in the lower right hand corner.
I used a flair, and some suitcases to create a little cluster in the bottom right corner for the photo. I put a camera ephemera and little tag beside the photo, and then staggered the rest of the suitcases diagonally across the page, up to the top left corner where I put a small cluster with more of the black paper and a quote. I fussy cut the white borders off of the ephemera pieces because the background was white, and I felt like it made them stand up off the background better. I finished the layout with a title using little October Afternoon tile letter stickers that I outlined in black, and then scattered around the little black planes ephemera and some SpiegelMom Scraps sequins. I added little bits of journalling to each of the little, tiny, tags I added to the embellishment clusters and then outlined the whole layout with a black pen.
I love how much the photo stands out in this layout, it really is the focus, with lots of little details all around it. It was a very simple layout to pull together, but I just love how all of the details come together to tell a story.
